After 23 years, Diane and Alvin Hoppenjans have decided it’s time for a change at their popular business in Ferdinand.
The couple have sold Tin Lizzie’s Home Décor and Gifts at 430 Main Street to Laura and Matt Reckelhoff.
“Alvin and I so appreciate the loyalty and support we have received over the past 23 years, both from our dedicated employees and from our wonderful customers,” said Diane. “It’s been an amazing journey, and we are so grateful for all the support each step of the way.”
Diane and Alvin opened Tin Lizzie’s in April, 1993. Over the years, the couple expanded with two additions to the building, the largest of which doubled the downstairs floor space in 2009. The enabled them to offer additional home décor products, as well as boutique items and a larger variety of gifts in what is now nearly 4,000 sq. feet of retail space.
Laura has always wanted to operate a business like Tin Lizzie’s so when her aunt and uncle asked if she was interested in buying the business if they ever decided to sell, her response was quick. “It was an email and I think my response was ‘yes’ in all caps with a bunch of exclamation points at the end of it,” Laura said.
A lifelong resident of Ferdinand, the Hoppenjans saw Laura and Matt as good owners for the continued operation of the business they started and nurtured over the years. “Laura and Matt are both so community minded. Laura’s experience in both tourism and marketing will be a great asset as she leads Tin Lizzie’s into the next era,” Diane wrote. “We look forward to seeing Tin Lizzie’s continue to grow and have every confidence in the world it’s in great hands.”
Laura has previous experience in marketing, sales and event planning that accent her talent for home decorating. Most recently she was in communications for the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand. She will manage and operate the store which also has eight part-time employees.
“I am honored Diane and Alvin have entrusted Tin Lizzie’s to us,” said Laura. “I have always wanted to This is a dream of mine that has now come to fruition. I am thankful for our supportive employees and am excited about the future of Tin Lizzie’s.”
Diane and Alvin will still be around though. The ownership change was official on October 1 but Diane is still helping with the transition. Plus, Alvin’s handmade items will continue to be sold there.
“I am so happy to finally be out of the office,” Laura said. She was relegated to the office until the transfer was complete as the change was kept secret.
“Now, I can finally get out to meet with customers and start decorating,” she added.
The store features popular home décor, boutique items, wedding registry, inspirational items, locally made items, and gifts. Although, no major plans for changes are in the works at the store, Laura will be adding an expanded gift registry that will be available for anyone to register at anytime rather than solely for special events like weddings, showers and birthdays.
The store is on Facebook as Tin Lizzie’s Home Décor and Gifts and can be contacted at 812-367-1874.
Laura, 40, and Matt, 42, have three young children and live in Ferdinand.
